VIXToscope II

VIXToscope II — Infinite Recursion is a giant kaleidoscope: 12’ mirrors, 15,000 addressable LEDs, large-scale aluminum structure wrapped in a printed vinyl skin. Reality drops away when you put your head inside the 2’ wide oculus: your peripheral vision goes away, replaced by morphing video reflected to infinity in three directions, all synced to a generative soundscape controlled by an inscrutable set of glowing knobs. Brain melts.

At Burning Man 2024

Officially placed by the Burning Man Artery team at the corner of 5:30 and Esplanade — one of the highest-traffic placements on the playa. Approximately 7,000 visitors over the event.

The very first person to see it at Burning Man 2024: “Whoa… this is just like DMT!”

Evolution

Successor to VIXToscope I (Gateway, 2023) — same kaleidoscopic core idea expanded from 8’ mirrors to 12’, with the addition of full external lighting and structural ambition.

LEDs made in collaboration with Kevin Chester. Kevin also single handedly created a local community of supporters who selflessly gave dozens of hours soldering and assembling the vast number of LED assemblies, and who arrived on playa early for setup and stayed late for teardown.
